No game comes even remotely close to cricket in India as far as fan following, spectators and money is concerned. The game continues to enjoy an outsized following in the country and many believe no sports in India will be able to dislodge it from its pedestal anytime soon in the future. In fact, cricket as a sport always had fascinated Indians since its very inception. The game introduced into the country by the British flourished in the country with active royal patronage.

India did not have a competitive Test team for a long time but it didn’t deter the India population from following this game passionately. One of the probable reason for sky high popularity of cricket in India could be due to the unique features that the game offered. The game always enjoyed mass popularity in India but its popularity soared after the rise of superheroes like Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev and Sachin Tendulkar. The era of live cricket coverage and the hosting of Wills World Cup in 1996 catapulted cricket’s popularity to an astral plane in the country. The cricket-watching public became particularly enamoured with one-day internationals and as India featured in more and more of those matches, the popularity of the game knew no bounds. Cricket attracted audience and news coverage in India that no sport could ever hope of achieving in the country.

Kapil Dev's underdog team won a thrilling final against the overwhelming favourites West Indies to bring home the World Cup in 1983 and with that, cricket became India's number 1 sport.

The triumph in the Benson & Hedges World Championship of Cricket followed two years later and Indian cricket never looked back. Cricket was the game that captured the imagination of Indian sports fans like never before and the 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 World Cup wins further strengthened the game's status as the nation's most popular sport.

Keeping in trend with the rise in popularity of T-20 cricket not only in India but the world as a whole, The National School Cricket League (NSCL), an initiative of the School Games Federation of India, offers the ultimate platform for school cricket.
