ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY-GREEN SPACE By Winnie Melda

The research article by Peng, Chen and Wang (2008) uses CITY green model to assess the benefits of urban green spaces in terms of runoff reduction and carbon fixation. The CITY green approach was used to calculate the ecological advantages of different land use types in the city of Nanjing.

The paper provides a reference for city planning and urban green space establishment. They studied the ecological benefits of six land uses in the main city of Nanjing. They found out that green areas provide the highest ecological benefits because of the large canopy and reduced impervious surfaces in green squares. The study showed that the ecological benefits of green spaces decreased from green areas, public facilities, residential areas, squares and roads.

The authors of this article are graduates from the Chinese academy of science in Beijing, and they seem to have a clear mind on green space. The article targets the city planners, and developers, and it can be of use to them as it shows the benefits of green spaces in towns. The article can be of use in my research as it points the ecological benefits of different land use types that can direct me as I carry on with my research on green space. In the article and other articles that I have gone through, the theme of benefits of runoff reduction is common.

This research article by Schroll, Lambrinos, Righetti and Sanndrock (2010) evaluated the storm water performance of green roofs during the predominately winter climate of the United States Pacific Northwest. The study also tested whether the amount of water used in irrigating green roof vegetation in a dry climate, influences storm water performance. The researchers conducted the study on the campus of Oregon state university Corvallis. The rain at the site is seasonal, and the study was carried out during two different rainfall seasons. The weather data were collected by a weather station 6.4 km from the test plots. They found out that runoff from conventional roofs directly reflected the rainfall although there was a slight variation caused by experimental error. They concluded that reduced plant water use during the winter limits the ability of vegetation to restore water storage capacity in between storms. They ascertain that there is a need to evaluate plant species across a wide range of environmental conditions needed in order to develop regional vegetation that optimizes stormwater function.

The authors are from the department of horticulture of the Oregon state university. They are knowledgeable in the field of research as their article has all the qualities of a research paper. Their article targeted roof designers who could use their findings in designing roof that could optimize stormwater functions.

This article is crucial in my research as it me to the basic requirements of any regional vegetation. The theme of imperviousness and water runoff is also present in this article.

The research article by Walsh, Fletcher and burns aimed at developing methods for inputs to environmental flow assessment. They used ecological to different storm water drainage system as evidence to achieve this objective. They also identified the nature of hydrologic change resulting from urban storm water runoff and the ways by which these hydrologic changes are prevented in streams where ecological conditions have been prevented. The researchers compared hydrographs of four streams of opposing catchment urban volume and stormwater drainage system. The researchers also quantified the increase in total volume caused by urban stormwater runoff by comparing stream flow volumes and from underdeveloped catchment with those of impervious surface under the same rainfall conditions. They found out that in catchments with total imperviousness, conventional stream water drainage reduces base flows and increases the frequency of storm flows. They concluded that in urbanized catchments, dispersed urban storm water retention measures can protect urban stream ecosystems by mimicking the hydrologic impacts of an informal drainage. This is achieved by harvesting sufficient water and keeping it out of the stream and treating the water before discharging

The article follows the conventional way of writing research paper and it targets the water resource managers who can use the findings of their research storm water so that they can consider the storm water as potential source water in towns.
 

The article is useful in my literature review as it is an introduction to storm and water resource management and the mechanism that change the hydrologic systems. A well-engineered green space can help decreasing imperviousness, therefore, reducing the effects of runoff to hydrologic systems.
